Greenville Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

Selma Cooter

Why did you join the Order?

I first became interested in the Order in March 1993, when I worked at Headquarters in San Francisco as a doorman. I didn't have the time to do it, and when I moved back in '96, I thought about it, but again, I didn't have the time to dedicate to it.

In September 2016, I saw the Sisters at Blue Ridge Pride and thought it's finally time. As a founder in another House, I didn't go through the elevation process as others do, but I am still growing alongside the Aspirants, Postulants, and Novices in the Abbey of the Grand Palmetto... and learning from them as well.

What is your personal mission or ministry?
I am going through a period of change at this time in my life, and as such, I think that my Ministry is going to be one of reaching the older generation, of all gender and sexual expressions, and fostering a greater understanding of how we are all facing obsolescence unless we have value to the future, and passing what we have learned and experienced to our young, while reassuring both sides that there is value to both sides of the generation gap.

Name at least one person (living or dead - met them or not) who inspires you?
Xaviera Hollander, "The Happy Hooker". At the height of the '70s sexual liberation, she wrote about her life "tricking" and thumbed her nose at a society that was looking down on her profession and said unapologetically "fuck you" to conventional morés and puritanical attitudes. And she made bank on it!

What is your favorite quote?
"I never forget a face. Especially when I've sat on it."
                                                                                                                                                       -Kathleen Turner, "Crimes of Passion"

Or

"I wouldn't suck your lousy dick if I was suffocating and there was oxygen IN YOUR BALLS!"
-Taffy Davenport (Mink Stole) "Female Trouble"

What is your social media presence?

Name:

Sister Selma Cooter

Why did you choose that name?

I have a history of working in the sex industry, ie. film, print, and working in baths and sexclubs, and chose a name that reflects sex positivity and reflects that side of my personality. What people don't realize is that "sex work" isn't all that the sex industry is about, so selling yourself isn't the only way to be in "the business". And I am proud of my resumé... it's all been honest work and unlike Republican politicians, I have never had to pay anyone to say that I didn't do any of it.

Who is your mother in the Order?
As a founder of the Beer City Sisters, Abbey of All Souls, I did not have a mother as other Sisters do.
